WHAT EXACTLY IS HURLING?
Hurling, and its female counterpart Camogie, can be described as a mix of lacrosse and field hockey. The game is played on a field that is longer and wider than a football field, with goals and uprights similar to those in rugby. The game is administrated by the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association), and by the USGAA in North America.
Players use a stick, which has a curved, flat end designed for striking, and a small leather ball called a sliotar, roughly the size of a baseball. The ball can be advanced by striking it on the ground, in the air, or with the hand. Players can also "solo" the ball by balancing it on their stick. However, players cannot pick up the ball with their hands; it must be lifted off the ground using the stick.
Scoring involves either sending the ball into the goal for three points or over the goal for one point. While the game allows contact, such as shoulder checks, hits from the front or back are prohibited.
In North America, teams consist of 13 players, with positions including defenders, midfielders, and attackers - see the diagram below for positions.
